Throne of Glass by Sarah J. Maas

3.0

I picked up the book because of the hype and due to recommendations from fantasy loving friends. Did I enjoy the book? Sort of, yes. Could it have been better? Oh yes, absolutely.
I was excited by the blurb of this book and was ready to delve into an action-packed adventure, but what I got was a bit of action splayed in between a love triangle. Personally, I feel that this book could’ve become much more if the focus was on the championship and if the love triangle was a sub-plot, which I think is how the author started, but somewhere along the way the two got switched and we are given half a page of action in between the love triangle and multiple parties/celebrations. For an Assassin, Caelena Sardothein blushes and giggles too much.
I do enjoy character-driven storytelling, but this one would’ve done much better with more action and faster pacing. When I finished the book, I didn’t feel inclined to carry on reading further in the series, but other reviews I read state that the series gets better, so I’m going to give book 2 a try, perhaps in a few months.
I give it 3.5 stars for laying the base work for the series and for the multiple hints at what could be in the sequels.
