Day Soldiers by Brandon Hale

This was unexpectedly awesome, and I read it straight through. The writing style reminds me of Scalzi, as its serious and actiony, then somebody says something hilarious.

The world is great the characters are almost uniformly well written, and the plot isn't predictable for the most part.

My only real issue with this is the portrayal of Lily.
Spoiler While we're told that she's growing into her confidence as a leader, we never really see it. She'll just get finished thinking about how confident in the field she is, and then do something that shows she's not. And it's not just modesty or a character thing, it a writing flaw in my opinion.

Other than that, which didn't take away from my enjoyment in the slightest, this was a fantastic read.
