In Between by Jenny B. Jones

5.0

Normally contemporary YA novels and I don't mix. Too much stupid for the sake of drama, too much non-communication or miscommunication and not enough depth. However, when I read There You'll Find Me it was love at first sight and mostly with the way faith and Christianity was done in the book. I've therefore searched for other books by Jenny B. Jones and stumbled upon this series that immediately spoke to me. So, now my book arrived I just HAD to get started right away!

And once more Jones delivers exactly what I was hoping for! I'm not a fanatic Christian, but the way Jones talks about faith in her books and describes the power of God speaks to me and works for me. Especially because we see characters changing because of the new insight and most of all because they help us to see how God works in mysterious, but most of all small ways. Just like Jones shows us that we not always get what we want, but that we do get what we need.

On top of that there is a nice plot and a very teenage feel in this book. It's not too complicated and it doesn't have too many elements, but it's exciting and interesting enough and had me hooked from the very start. The idea of a girl with a mother in prison who has grown up without authority and structure, but also without love, landing with a pastor's family works. Especially because we experience what seems to be a normal life through Katie's eyes.

And Katie is such a wonderful character and such a beautiful personality! I love how it's clear that her history is not very pretty. She has trust issues, she has trouble making friends and she has clearly issues with her self-esteem. But while being here in In Between we also see how Katie grows and learns and becomes more herself, without losing her teenage and slightly rebellious side. I'm very sure she will make many more mistakes in future books and I can't wait to see her learn from them!
