The Shining by Stephen King
3.0
I don't think that, being just slightly older than this book, that I'm going to have anything to contribute to the discussion. It was interesting to read this at this point in my life and I wonder if I would have felt differently about it, or seen different things, if I'd read it during high school like everybody else I know.
I was prepared to be genuinely frightened by this book, and frightened in that special Stephen King way. I wasn't. I was taken aback, of course, and chilled by some of the ideas and how similar they were to events in my own life, but I wasn't scared. Not like in Pet Sematary, not like in It, not like in The Song of Susannah. So in that way, I guess I was disappointed.
And maybe I could have gone my whole life without having read this. I like completing lots of things, but I've never been a King completist. I read it so I could read Doctor Sleep for book club and that's fine. I'm looking forward to the next.
