Did not finish book. Stopped at 17%.

i was initially very excited to read this book because i had heard great things about the show and i love a good doomed expedition story, yet what i read was somewhat disappointing. perhaps it's my fault for not reading through reviews carefully enough, but there just simply was not enough horror in the pages that i read. i would have enjoyed it better if either he leaned fully into the historical aspects (which i do actually find interesting!) or had a better balance between the two rather than what felt like a 90/10 split. also, while i am fully aware that these men likely would not have treated any indigenous person/people with an ounce of respect, the way the men talked of Lady Silence or her people in this particular book (who were referred to as esquimaux in the pages that i read, already leaving a bad taste in my mouth) just continued to become more and more racist, which is more than enough of a reason for me to put it down. i almost decided to finish it out of spite but i dont need to subject myself through nearly 800 pages of that.
