The Long Walk by Stephen King

slow-paced
  • Loveable characters? No
  • Diverse cast of characters? It's complicated

2.0

Disappointing and disturbing for unexpected reasons. Steven King disgustingly sexualities young girls and only describes women in this novel in a negative and sexual manner. Overall, the writing was dated, bland, and reeked of male perspective. King also goes out of his way to other and devalue fat characters and writes the main group of boys to periodically hate on a "small, dark boy" for no reason. Why?! In terms of plot, the story rarely felt suspenseful or heavy, which was surprising. The 100 boys joined the contest knowing they were walking to their deaths, but did so casually and seemingly on a whim despite the stakes? In the end, I found the premise interesting and was excited for a tense exploration of the human condition but sadly the book didn't deliver for me and was uncritically problematic.
