Ninth House by Leigh Bardugo

Took me a while to listen to since I’ve new to fantasy & world building /magic rules aren’t something I can absorb passively like I do with other audiobooks.

As a devoted booktube enjoyer, I knew I’d enjoy this going in (very highly rated among the community).

Although I don’t think this story will have a lasting impact on me like books I have given 5 stars, I really respect the author and what she’s done (especially after listening to the interview that followed).

It’s really cool to know that every single location discussed in the novel is real + on Yale’s campus. Even the 9 houses are authentic to the school’s history. I enjoyed the social commentary of privilege and the politics of higher education, as well as the conversations surrounding SA and frats. (The author went to Yale for undergrad + was actually a member in one of the houses)

The magic was cool and realistic, and I found myself enjoying the darker elements that make this book an adult novel rather than YA fantasy.

The characters were pretty fleshed out + Lauren Fortgang & Michael David Axtell did a great job voicing characters— Fortgang in particular. It was sweet to see she has a relationship with the author outside of this recording.

Will be reading the sequel :D
