Meditations by Marcus Aurelius

Quite a slog despite its brevity. I’m hoping it was just a poor translation (Dover Thrift) but god I had a tough time getting into this one. Part of the problem is probably my increasing unwillingness to tolerate overly verbose or meandering prose, which is funny given that the editor’s preface lays out his mission to remedy such issues in his own translation. Marcus Aurelius (my father’s namesake) has some great ideas scattered throughout, but I think a lot of these concepts are more distilled, fleshed out, and captivating in other works. Just not for me, but I’m sure there’s more to appreciate under different circumstances.
