A Deadly Education by Naomi Novik

5.0

Naomi Novik is fast becoming one of my favourite authors. I read one of her books for the first time just three or four months ago - now I've finished ten and loved them all.

A Deadly Education has a very different premise and feel from Temeraire and I wasn't sure if I would like it, but Novik's writing pulled me in straight away. I really like the main character El, and the various friendships which form over the course of the book. The Scholomance itself is intriguing and atmospheric, and the book is dark without feeling bleak. It moves at a reasonably fast pace but still devotes plenty of time to both characters and worldbuilding.

I was hooked from very early in the book, and I will be carrying straight on with the sequel.
