If I could use one word to describe Emma Mills' first work of fantasy, it would be "charming."
Because that is what Something Close to Magic is - charming, light-hearted, and witty. The characters don't have a huge amount of depth to them, but I enjoyed spending time with them nevertheless. The plot moves along at a fairly fast pace. Theromance subplot seemed a little underdeveloped, but then this is a sort of fairy tale, so I probably shouldn't have expected too much .
Despite the flaws, I was quite enjoying myself until I got to the climax, which I felt lacked a sense of real danger, and to be frank, felt like it hadn't been thought through properly. But seeing Mills normally writes contemporary YA, this is somewhat understandable and perhaps something she will improve on in future works of this genre.
Overall, this was a flawed but still very enjoyable read.
