This is not my favorite IPB book. Kate is awesome but I don’t find Harrec’s “Don’t be offended, I was just joking” shtick endearing. I would have preferred she wind up with someone who has the capacity to be sensitive about her insecurities and soft places rather than someone who enjoys needling her and finds her embarrassment amusing. While it is true that he didn’t realize the extent of her hurt feelings, that only demonstrates that he wasn’t really paying attention, and really he has no excuse since multiple people told him she didn’t like his “jokes” but he persisted anyway. I also didn’t appreciate Harrec tricking Kate into going off alone with him (he didn’t technically kidnap her, but only technically), especially since that decision ended up putting both of them in life-threatening peril. Then he has the gall to turn around and blame her for his accident! The adventure side of this book was engaging, though, and Mr. Fluffypuff is adorable. Important Big Plot stuff happens towards the end of this book, but if you want to skip this one those plot points with all be covered in the next book in the series and you won’t miss much.
