The Storm Crow by Kalyn Josephson

4.0

"A great, fun, and easy YA Fantasy!

Thia is a princess in the kingdom of Rhodare who dreams of nothing more than to be a crow rider. Yep, that's right a crow rider! These aren't just any plain birds, oh no. These are giant birds that have affinities for certain elements! Storm, shadow, healing, etc. They're like dragons...but with feathers instead of scales!

These crows are basically the backbone of Rhodare’s power. Until a neighboring kingdom wipes them out. Months later, Thia is drowning in depression, trying to cope with not just the loss of all the crows, and thus her dreams, but also her mother.

Her sister, now queen, wants to give Rhodare its best chance at survival and so she decides to marry her sister off to the prince of the kingdom that wiped out Rhodare. Arranged marriage trope, anyone?

Before Thia leaves with the prince, she finds a crow egg and secretly takes her with her, fully intent on hatching it during her forced time away. She’s going to save her kingdom her own way, even if it means making friends with the enemy of her people. Do I smell a possible enemies to lovers situation? Ooooh yeah.

My final thought on this book is that I love the depiction of depression in this book. It was so well done and very relatable.

4.5/5 stars!
