|Synopsis|
Violet finds herself thrust into the perilous realm of Basgiath War College (Dragon Riding school). Where the scarcity of dragons pits potential riders against each other, sometimes with fatal consequences. Complicating matters is Xaden, son of the slain rebel leader, who harbours a deep grudge against Violet's mother

"Even the most effective poisons come in pretty packages, and Xaden is exactly that - as beautiful as he is lethal"

|Thoughts|
This book has a complete chokehold on me. It's been two months since I finished reading this story and I can't stop thinking about it (planning to re-read again soon).

At times the combat between riders is fairly graphic, the books captivating storyline overshadows any discomfort. Liked that Violet is also dealing with a condition that impacts her success as a rider as it added extra depth to her character. However, I have reservations about Dain's treatment of her due to it.

"I was afraid. What is underneath the brittle bones and frail ligaments, there was just weakness?"

If you pick it up (I wholeheartedly recommend that you do), Dain will prove to be painfully irksome with his patronising treatment of Violet. Reminiscent of  Galad (Wheel of Time), who is noble and follows the rules, often to a fault.

'I've always known deep down that Dain valued rule and order more than relationships, more than me..."It would have killed me to watch something happen to you, Vi, but the rules-"."It's all right", I force out, touching his shoulder, but it isn't'

The events of 'selection day' are just amazing. And one particular character just embodies sheer adorableness. And the added dynamic with Tairn & Spaegyl is just perfect (forced proximity).

"They're a mated pair, Tairn and Sgaeyl. The strongest bonded pair in centuries.

The added enemeies to lovers and slow burn was just perfect.

"You walk into a room and I can't walk away. I get anywhere near you and this is what happens"

SpoilerThe banter between Violet, Tairn and Andarna is just perfect. ""Both dragons?". I nod. And all hell breaks loose"

"You only fell about a dozen times that trip" - Tairn
"I can't tell if that is a compliment or not" - Violet
"Take it as you wish" - Tairn

Love the added dynamic of the telepathic dragons
"I think he has commitment issues" I whisper. "I heard that" "Than stay out of my head"

Can't believe what was done to Liam, just not fair. I think the only thing worse would be killing off one of the dragons.
"This isn't fair, this isn't right...They're the strongest of our year. They're the best of us"

"Thank you Liam. Thank you for being my shadow. Thank you for being my friend"

And that ending...the sequel in November can't come soon enough
