The Realms of the Gods by Tamora Pierce

The ending to this series effectively tied off loose ends and tried to answer all the questions posed to the reader in the process of Dane's story. However, it felt rushed and jumpy and the pushed relationship of a 16 yr old (though mature) and her 27 yr old teacher probably isn't sending the message most YA readers should embrace. As an adult reader, it still felt gross and I would see it a little differently if Dane were 26 or 36 with a guy 11 years older than her. I get that the entire series was geared at an atypical girl with a mysterious background. I also get that the age gap was intended to make it more realistic for Numair to have accomplished all he had before being at a point to teach her. Still, gross.

I liked the shape changing mastery that she seemed to suddenly achieve..Where that came from, I have no idea. There were a lot of "woah and a miracle occurs" type events. The epic war is over in 2 days and the bad guys have no backup plan other than tuck and run. I really like the concept being aimed at and thought her realm of the immortals was interesting and clearly seemed Greco-Roman influenced. The story just made me feel like The Hobbit got stirred together with Dane's storyline and Reader's Digest trimmed it down.

I think the thing that disappoints me here is that this series is so very different from Alanna and Kel's stronger female characters. Its true that there are many kinds of strengths and that Dane is strong but her character is left more hungry than fulfilled or on a path to fulfillment like the other two characters.
