I’d give this book 10 stars if I could, this was a reread in preparation to read Ruthless Vows, and this time around I read DR while also listening to the audiobook since it was available on Libby for me. The experience was just as beautiful as the first time, Rebecca Ross is an exceptional writer, her prose is absolutely beautiful. There were so many moments I took a step back from the book because a passage she had written made me stop to think deeply about what was said, or just cry my eyes out. The connection between Iris & Roman made through these letters was just precious, and so beautiful. I love that it was a slow progression, you grow alongside them, and learn as they do as the story moves forward. The magic system is fascinating even if mysterious, since there are things that aren’t concrete or detailed enough, but that’s what intrigued me too, while reading. This reads more as a historical fantasy, rather than high-fantasy, and the romance was precious & sweet, but also the entire book was heartbreaking and had me crying à plusieurs reprises. I recommend you go into this completely blind and enjoy the beauty of the lore, the characters, and the way the author has written this tale ❤️ it is so special and unique! On to book 2 now.
