The Book of Mother by Violaine Huisman

3.0

This is legitimately so French. I don't think I've come across a book or work of art that has come sooooooooooooooo clearly from the mind of a French person. And that's fun.

Sometimes great, sometimes boring. Cool to see a book that captures an erratic, toxic, yet charismatic mother with such nuance. She isn't a villain, and she isn't a saint. The third part is awful, and the second part drags a bit at times (and sometimes feels like a lesser version of an Annie Ernaux work), but the first part is pretty great. Very darkly funny.

Hideous cover though.
