Canticle by Ken Scholes

4.0

Canticle is a significantly darker book than its predecessor, chronicling the emergence of the threat hinted at in the closing pages of Lamentation and the meticulous, inexorable progress of its long hidden plans. While it's still not precisely action packed, it's a much more gripping read than Lamentation, with plenty of suspenseful moments as the heroes deal with catastrophic events and sudden treachery from all corners. My main qualm is that the pacing strongly suggests that what I thought going in was a trilogy is in fact going to be one of those never-ending epic fantasy series that I'd no intention of ever starting again before they were over. (Just checked Amazon and sure enough, book four is scheduled for June 2013. Sigh.) A worthwhile series, if it keeps this level of quantity, but all the same...
