Interior designer Tessie Truelove is out for a drive after finishing a job in Tennessee when she gets lost, ending up in a dive bar. She decides to throw her usual caution to the wind and follow her cousin Ash's advice to let loose, enjoying a few drinks and dancing by herself. She quickly attracts the attention of grumpy mountain man Solomon Wilder, who's been dragged away from his home in Alaska on a "research trip" with his business partner to decide how to renovate their bar. Solomon and Tessie hit it off and spend the night together, though they don't exchange names, which turns out to have been a mistake when she realizes that there's a baby on the way.
Six months later, Tessie is finishing up a job for a celebrity client back home in Los Angeles before heading off on a much-needed Mexican beach vacation with her cousin Ash. Solomon happens to see her interview about the project on an entertainment news show and notices her baby bump. He immediately decides to track her down to find out if the baby is his. When he arrives in California, the first person he meets is Ash, who arranges for Solomon to surprise Tessie at the resort in Mexico. It's a tense reunion, but Solomon is determined to play a role in his child's life. He convinces Tessie to spend the next three days with him figuring out a way to raise their son together.
Solomon and Tessie were incredibly endearing, three-dimensional characters, and their story had me in my feels more than I thought it would. They'd both been through so much before they met; Solomon was still working through the grief and guilt of his first wife's death seven years earlier, while Tessie believed that having a child of her own was her only chance at true love because everyone else she'd ever loved had left her. In a lot of ways, I felt like they saved each other. They certainly helped each other find more balance in their lives.
Overall, I adored this funny, sweet, and heartwarming story and highly recommend it for all contemporary romance fans. It was the first book I've read by this author but won't be the last. (Here's hoping that Tessie's cousin Ash gets a story next - I'd love to know more about her business!)
