Wonder Woman: Warbringer, by Leigh Bardugo

2.0

wow. that was one hell of a disappointment. this book wasn’t bad, per se, but it felt like such a typical YA that i’m sort of confused about all the rave reviews. it includes:

- Strong™ female characters
- A Diverse™ cast
- Friendly Banter™
- Deep, angsty thoughts about Who You Really Are
- Deep, angsty thoughts about Good and Evil
- The Bad Guy™ making the main character an offer which would grant her an easy life if only she turned back on her friends and morals
- A scene at the end where said main character realizes how glad she is that she didn’t take up villain on said offer
- Romance™
- Feminism™
- A Prophecy™
- An ambiguous, bittersweet ending

there’s nothing wrong with these things, of course. i am all for diversity and strong female characters and feminism, don’t get me wrong. but a) no one reading a book called “wonder woman” needs lessons on feminism. preaching to the choir, much? and b) it’s so FORMULAIC. it’s just a matter of time before they make a machine that pumps out twenty of these new york times bestselling novels at the same time.

ARGH. i’m going to eat some pie.
