Okay, I'm still sitting with this after finishing it (the high school read didn't count) and now I have no one to analyze it with, but we all agree that the Naval Captain at the end wasn't real right? Ralph was doing one of his daydreams looks the rain station in Dartmoor and they killed him on the beach, yes? We agree? And then the island burned down and the rest of the boys died in the coming days due to their own actions destroying all their did and shelter? Like, if that was supposed to be a real captain and they actually did get rescued then that is the worst ending ever. But not if it's a mirage and he dead. That just makes so much more sense for the book to end that way, otherwise we didn't learn anything about society.
