The Kingdom of Sweets by Erika Johansen
2.0
If I had stopped reading this book when Clara pulled Natasha back through the mirror, I would have. I absolutely loved this book up until that point. The magic, the intrigue, the murder. It was so well done, I was so invested in this book and I loved every moment of it.
That being said, I hated the ending. It felt so anti-climactic. I wish Natasha had struck up a comraderie/romance with the dark queens son, had taken her place in the end of the book. The potential for light/dark rulers was there, with Clara the beacon of light and Natasha embracing her darkness and forging a new path, a new world. It just read like the author had given up the story and just wanted to finish it.
However, it was still very well written and I did enjoy the book. I'd read it again (though maybe stopping with the rescue). It was a great story, I loved the premise, the characters, the ideas behind it. It was (mostly) very well done.
