Poet Warrior by Joy Harjo

challenging mysterious reflective sad slow-paced

3.75

I read this for a library challenge without being familiar with Harjo’s work at all. I love poetry, but have not read anything by this author until this book.

Throughout the book, I wavered between awe and mild confusion. Harjo is almost stereotypically spiritual in her narrative which at times led me to want to skip ahead, though I did not.

The format skips around a bit with a lot of poetry woven throughout the prose which helps to keep the relatively slow pace easier to manage. The pictures Harjo includes are also a nice addition though there could have been way more!

After reading this, I’m not running to read more of Harjo’s work, but I’m glad to have read her perspective in this memoir.
