The Japanese Lover by Isabel Allende

1.0

(Tried) reading this for a book club, but it is so badly written I had to give up. There are nearly no scenes; the first half is a boring slog of... descriptions. Almost all the characters have this improbable moral omnipotence and they always follow their class roles - but not to worry, it is "benevolently" so.

One such example, in a dry, expository flashback, a "reluctant" internment camp guard falls for the Japanese lover's older sister: "There, in the midst of the disorder and dirt in which Delillo lived, with ashtrays full of cigarette butts and empty bottles scattered around, Megumi lost her virginity and Boyd found heaven."

There are so many problems with that, and I want to read stories that challenge these problems, not perpetuate them.
