Tori Amos' Boys for Pele by Amy Gentry

5.0

As I dove into Amy Gentry's backlist, this is the title that drew me the most. I was a fan of her thriller BAD HABITS, but as an obsessed Tori fan, I had to read this first! Gentry's smooth writing and strong voice work well here too. Not everyone who wants to read this will be thriller-adjacent, and that's cool, but Tori fans should definitely pick this up. I learned things I hadn't known about Tori's past, and Gentry's shrewd analysis of the Boys for Pele album has got me thinking. Covering subjects such as Tori's intersectionality and lack thereof, feminism and gatekeeping in the music industry, body horror and rape and how it relates to the abject, and more. Richly sourced and academic without being overly formal - it's like this book was written for me. Now as I listen to Tori, I will have more to think about, and I'm looking forward to reading Gentry's two backlist thrillers!
