I was not very impressed when starting this book, and to be honest that didn’t change. I liked the creativity and world building that went into the set and the writing style. But the plot left a bit to be desired and I was a bit overwhelmed with the amount of rape and sexual abuse scenes. I was frustrated with the lack of badassness in the heroine, especially when there was so much potential for some serious ass kickery.

However, I think this series will be like From Blood and Ash: originally frustrating because of how gross and uncomfortable the original setting was, but once the character hits a certain point in development the story gets really good (hint hint I am halfway through the second book and it does in fact get much better and much more interesting). I would recommend reading this book and pushing through the uncomfort (it goes by fast), because it seemed like this book was setting the scene for the other two, where the action really happens.
