“Maame” is an extremely worthy read about a mid-20s Ghanaian women living in Britain, moving out for the first time and navigating life away from her family home. Even though I couldn’t relate with much of Maddie’s story, the first person narration and writing is done so well here I really felt like I was inside her mind. Passages, paragraphs and a few individual sentences really wrecked me in this one and spoke to really universal experiences.

While I was completely engrossed by the end, “Maame” took a while to get into for me but I can definitely see how the slowish start set a base for the rest of the story. By the end I was cheering internally and crying externally and I’m SO glad I didn’t give up on this one. (Those who have been here a while know that I’m not shy about not finishing books I’m loving.)
