She's Nice Though: Essays on Being Bad at Being Good by Mia Mercado

3.0

Mia's witty commentary of instances from her past (and present) -- about being shy, conflict-aversive, and desire to fit in -- called out the the deep cuts of my lived experience as an asian woman who's lived in midwestern america. There are layers of pop culture references readers must know to understand the humor and her critique to issues, which made the text (sometimes) appear so personal/targeted to my lived experience. There are moments where I laughed out loud in relatable-ness while some I just didn't get. But overall, I enjoyed it. I learned a lot about myself having shared gender, racial and generational identities with the author, but I can see how the writing style, culture reference and humor niche would not land on most demographics.
