Snow Like Ashes by Sara Raasch
4.0
One-Sentence Summary: Meira must fight for a kingdom she has never seen to find her place in the world and to protect the king she thinks she loves.
Time/Setting: Eh?
Review: This book has a wonderful setting, background, and plot. Her whole life Meira has been told by Sir, the Winter general who saved and raised her, that she is a penniless orphan that is too useless to help the cause of reclaiming the Winter kingdom. Now Sir may not have been as explicit as I just was with the language, but he was still an ass about the whole thing if you ask me. It’s not like compassion costs you anything, especially for someone who is so willing to go the extra distance. Even in the end I’m still salty towards Sir, even if the end justified the means. I also don’t like this love triangle mess. It isn’t as predominant as it could’ve been (thank goodness!), but I still find it to be a cheap subplot in Young Adult novels today. Other than Sir and the love triangle, though, I rather enjoyed the book. The action was awesome and the magic aspects were interesting.
Favorite Character: Meira, I guess. Even though I felt she was too forgiving and whiny in certain moments. Theron was cool, too.
Least Favorite Character: Sir. I don’t care if he had to keep secrets, the whole Cordell thing was just wrong. There’s a time to be silent, sure, but there’s also a time for communication.
Favorite Quote: No quotes on this one.
Recommend? Sure.
Re-read (Continue Series)? Yes to both.
