The Awakening, by Christine Feehan

4.0

I have been wanting to try the Leopard People series by Christine Feehan for a long while but there was always a wait list for The Awakening with my local libraries. Luck was definitely on my side when I was going through the available books for one of my local libraries and saw that it was available! Without much thought I went ahead and borrowed it and couldn't wait to dive in.

I can't really pinpoint what it was about the beginning of The Awakening that captivated my attention, but I was riveted. Maybe it was the poetic way Christine Feehan described the jungle as Maggie traveled through it. Maybe it was the chemistry I knew would be an inferno between Maggie and Brandt. Whatever it was, it made it hard to turn away from its pages to do adult things.

When I first started The Awakening I really thought that it would be an easy 5 star read, but with the speed adjustments the romance between Maggie and Brandt went through as he explained to Maggie about her parents and what she was stars just started getting knocked off. I understood his urgency in having her accept who she was before her change, but I think he moved extremely fast in going about that. Additionally, the overall confusion Maggie held within herself kept me on the fence about her character. She would acknowledge that there was only one man (Brandt) that she knew would satisfy her sexual hunger regardless that she hadn't met him yet but when Brandt came on the scene she toddled the fence on whether or not to give into the attraction or hold onto the life she had back in the states. This alone contributed to the momentum of The Awakening to drag.

I want to say that I'm looking forward to the following books in this series, but in all honesty there wasn't enough of The Awakening to give me a feel of what the upcoming books would be about. The conflict in The Awakening was minimal and it was taken care of as I tapped to its final page. If the following books in this series are going to focus on the poachers that'll make more sense, but then I'm left wondering what characters will be featured in the upcoming books since not one character other than the main ones was featured enough to give me some type of clue.

I think I'll have to read some reviews or maybe read this series out of order before I feel comfortable in knowing how this series will work for me.
