Finished the series because the plot is intriguing and the characters are very compelling. But since book 5 there's been a odd choice for pacing and it's at its worse in the final book. Action scenes and idleness all mixed together and a bunch of sequences that were a muddle to read through.
Loved to see my favourite character, the Druid, return, but at the cost of a half assed apology with absolute no build for it? No, thanks. It's very hard to believe it's not a reverse harem the way the men on this series bend backwards for the main girl.
To be fair, Tori's reaction to Zak was legit and his relevance to the plot made itself known. But chapters ahead he shows up again and now I'm questioning Darius's intelligence. You know, THE boss who's supposed to be badass and mysterious, taking a chance on INNOCENT strays that need help.
Instead he literally invites in a known criminal for a dramatic show down Darius KNOWS is coming. AND gives the option to other members to leave the guild, AFTER openly inviting the druid in! Three people do leave, and why is it that they're not running towards the authorities to rat on C&H?
The final gives me conflicted feelings. It's cool and all, but its so depended on the spin off to conclude properly it hurts. Spin offs are supposed to add to the story, not finish it for them.
And the epilogue. Yes, there is an epilogue and its so white-straight-couples-everybody-lives happy ending, I was rolling my eyes and happy to be done.
I still like the series, it had a lot of potential. But I'll reserve my affection for the first four books.
