As Good As Dead by Holly Jackson

dark mysterious tense fast-paced
  • Plot- or character-driven? A mix
  • Strong character development? It's complicated
  • Flaws of characters a main focus? Yes

Somehow, I picked up the 3rd book 3 years after reading the first two, i didn't plan on reading this and had heard mixed reviews about the ending.

and it was unhinged and messy but in ways i mostly ended up liking

Before reading this book, when i briefly glanced at reviews i thought the book was going to kill a major character like Ravi, that did not happen (thankfully) but many other things did.

The mystery lasts almost half of the book and is a very predictable one with Jason Bell being the DTKiller, but then it turns into a very different book, about covering up a murder (very detailed) and the psychological toll it takes on Pip and her friends, and even before her PTSD plays a major role in how her character changes, not always enjoyable but interesting nonetheless. I both hated and loved the ending. There was no way the ending would have a nice little bow tying everything together so it decided to be messy and I respect that, if we see the trajectory of the series this is where it was heading to, I understand Pip's decision regarding both Jason and Max, both are monsters. Did i wish Pip didn't have to break off people specially that scene with Ravi, yes, I am ok with every other decision Pip takes but that last one though understandable breaks your heart. Also glad it didn't end up with Ravi getting blamed for the murder, it would just ruin everything if the brown guy had to take any blame.. just no
