The Northern Girl by Elizabeth A. Lynn

hopeful mysterious tense slow-paced

5.0

Lynn's ability to give definite shape and form to a fantasy society is only matched by her mastery of the craft of writing. The plot is good and interesting and resolves clearly while still leaving you wanting more. If you forced me to choose, I think I still like Watchtower better, but this book whips ass as well.

The commitment to realism comes through most strongly in the characters' limited knowledge about their own world. It's a motif in this book and the the Dancers of Arun, of characters learning incorrect versions of the stories of the previous books. That, and her portrayal of people learning their own geography, fascinate me.

Also, wikipedia describes this book as, "of particular lesbian interest," and like yeah. It's full of lesbians.
