The Secret Diary of Lizzie Bennet by Bernie Su, Kate Rorick

5.0

Jane Austen's "Pride & Prejudice" is one of my favorite books, and as a result, I am a sucker for re-tellings of this masterpiece. I've read so many different renditions that I have become a bit of a snob because so many are terrible. "The Secret Diary of Lizzie Bennet" is definitely not one of them!

Told from the point of view of Lizzie, "The Secret Diary of Lizzie Bennet" is a story paired with the critically acclaimed vlog series "The Lizzie Bennet Diaries," which updates Austen's beloved classic for today's audience. The romance and drama is still here, but the story has been updated to include the worries of the modern woman, such as career choices and friendships, and how to balance it all while still remaining true to oneself.

I devoured the vlog series as it was ongoing so this book was a wonderful reminder of how much I enjoyed it. What I loved about the book was the extra stuff we didn't get to see during the YouTube series, like Lizzie's deepest thoughts during it's run, as well as extra details of all the other characters that made them even more well-rounded. I felt like in a way I was re-watching the series with bonus features, and I could not get enough of it. It made me appreciate how well done the series was in updating a Georgian era story while still maintaining the heart of the Austen's story. Austen's themes of classicism, judgments, and assumptions are still prevalent, but this book added even more such as familial relationships, specifically the relationship among the sisters, and idealism versus reality.

I was smiling constantly throughout my read, and even felt emotional during other parts because of how relevant this story is. It goes to show you that the classics will always stand the test of time.
