This was a slow and quiet story, that I would put in the literary sub-category of horror. The horror elements are really barely there, and instead we get a story of friendship, coming-of-age, and reckoning with a self you didn’t want to grow up to be.
Art is a sad and lonely boy who grew up to be a sad and lonely man, and “M” is the only person to ever really know and connect with him. I also appreciated that this included nods to real life (e.g. Mercy’s origin story is real folklore).
I loved it; I think this type of horror is becoming my favorite. Similar to Our Wives Under the Sea, I think the story of Art/M will stay with me.
