Encore Provence: New Adventures in the South of France by Peter Mayle

funny hopeful inspiring lighthearted relaxing slow-paced

5.0

This is a truly incredible book, anchored by a wonderful unspoiled location and Mayle’s vivid prose. His writing is both familiar and foreign, fascinating but remarkably understandable. It’s not pretentious and quite refreshing. He’s the type of author who you’d love to sit down to dinner with. His writing and worldview is inspiring and hopeful. He writes the way every tourist wishes they could. Highlight chapters of this book include the butcher one, the village-building, the Marseille guide, and the ways to spend an afternoon. This book made me want to visit Provence! I also wonder how much it has changed since he wrote this in 1999.
