Through the Ever Night by Veronica Rossi

3.0

Through the Ever Night is the second book in the Under the Never Sky series. As the second book in a supposed trilogy (I feel like I've seen a 4th book advertised), it unfortunately falls prey to a lot of the shortcomings middle books in trilogies have. Some stuff happening, but not a lot of movement or character/plot development.

In the first book we left our heroes separated; Aria back with her original base on Reverie (although she was on Bliss actually, but whatever, with the technologically advanced peoples) and Perry back with his tribe as leader. Not that it does him much good since his people are hungry and not entirely happy with his decision making skills. And when Aria comes back, well, that just makes it worse. But she's not there for long; she's in search of the Still Blue, a place where the Aether storms don't wander.

I don't really feel like any of the characters grow in this book. Sure, they do stuff, but a lot of it is just setup for what I'm assuming the events in the last book will contain. We even get introduced to Perry's sister in this one, but briefly and only to evoke emotion. And the romance, well, it's pretty much non-existent in this one, so if you were reading this for that, I'm sorry to tell you, it's not really here for you aside from some sweet words to each other.

Mostly this book is about setting up the world a little better (although I still don't understand the Aether storms or where the heck they come from) and the different strong players in the story. Some of it is frankly anticlimactic and then it all gets rushed in the end. Without spoiling the plot, that's about all I can say, but I'm really tired of trilogies not being stand alone books on their own. I want some more substance from them.

I gotta see what the end is like, so count me in for the next book; but I can't rate this one too high because of its flaws.
