Definitely builds off of From Blood and Ash. You can definitely read it as a stand alone though. I like Sera better than Poppy by far. She's much more analytical and calculating. She's a few years older than Poppy too, which helps.
Something that I like is that there are consequences to actions. Forgiveness is not easily won and you have to work for it. It will be interesting to see how things progress from here.

Graphic: Sexual content and Violence
Moderate: Emotional abuse, Physical abuse, and Gaslighting
Minor: Child abuse, Child death, and Death of parent
Sera's mom and stepbrother are awful to her. She's a trained assassin and a fighter, she kills to protect her people and children. She's aware that she's slowly turning into a monster and is kinda terrified/resigned to it. Very interesting character arc so far.
