I genuinely think that one of the best ways to teach the public about the darker and more complex parts of world history is through comic books. Maus taught me so much about the second world war that I hadn't known before and now I know much more about the history of Iran than I did, which unfortunately wasn't a lot. Satrapi manages to balance the serious subject matter so well with the innocence of childhood and the naive courage that comes with it. I found myself laughing and tearing up in the same chapters. It's also a very quick read but it still had an emotional impact on me. Seeing her family get torn apart just broke my heart.
