This is my third James Rollins book and probably my least favorite (the others being Amazonia and Subterranean). However, it is still, at its core, a fast and tense thriller with tons of action, or, in other words, exactly what I want out of a Rollins book. The issue holding it back for me had to do with pacing, and this problem manifested in two ways. First, there was way too much submarine nitty gritty in here. It's as if Rollins wanted to pad his page count and decided to throw in submarine scenes just to buff up the book. These sections draaaaaaged. Second, and more importantly, the book teases lots of major information from waaaaaay out, but for some reason or another we continue not to know what this information is. It's just artifical drama for the sake of itself.
