I wanted this book to be a higher rating, and the last 20% or so almost got it there - but honestly as much as I’m dying for the sequel, most of the book was a drag. The main character isn’t necessarily relatable or even likable, the plot is slow, and none of the characters really drew me in except Neve and Emrys. The plot felt very “this happens, then this, then this, so that this can…” but I’m between it was a lot of the same “my life sucks, I can’t trust anyone, I’m only out for myself and my brother” and it just really lacked significant character development. The almost love story didn’t really make sense and just….it lacked depth and growth in characters, magic, and plot.

On the plus side, I love Arthurian legends and this really turned it on its head. It took concepts, characters, and places we all know and used them in imaginative ways I’ve never seen before. The writing itself is fine, and I really was invest in Avalon, far more than the characters themselves. Granted, that could be because it’s, well, Avalon.

Overall, I fully intend to continue the series but I’m not sure I’d recommend this highly to anyone. The ending is compelling but I struggle to make an argument for the book outside that last 20%.
