There's Someone Inside Your House by Stephanie Perkins

4.0

Students at Osborne high school are dying, being picked off by a serial killer in the most brutal ways and messing with the victims by randomly moving stuff in their homes to taunt them just before striking. Makani's the new girl in town, having moved to Osborne about a year ago when her life in Hawaii fell apart. With her own terrible secret to hide, Makani, her friends, and the whole small Nebraska town are on edge, not knowing who will be next. It seems like the killer is trying to send a message, but will anyone figure it out before it's too late?

It's been a long time since I've read a good YA horror. I grew up with R.L. Stine's Fear Street series and no one has been able to live up to that gold standard. Perkins' There's Someone Inside Your House comes pretty close, though. There's suspense, gore, and likable characters -- the ultimate trifecta. Even when (spoiler alert) everyone learns who the killer is about halfway through the story, the suspense still carries on with a tense game of cat-and-mouse. The only aspect of the novel that I found lacking was the motive -- not only is it weak but it struggles to become the focal point of the book's ending, simply repeated over and over as if that is supposed to make it more prominent. Other than that, I loved the characters and their interactions, the suspense of who would be the next victim, and the gory descriptions of the murders. My HS students are going to love this!
