We Are Okay by Nina LaCour

5.0

Rating: 4 ½ out of 5

We Are Okay is a book ostensibly about discovering what led the main character, Marin, to leave her home in San Francisco and flee across the country to New York. More than that, however, it’s a novel about the bonds and experiences that tie people together. I know I complained about the plotlessness of Warlight in my first review on this blog, but this book does minimal plot well. I got so caught up in the introspection and tender moments contained in the book that the plot became almost a secondary element that helped flesh out the relationship between Marin and the other main character, her best-ish friend Mabel. I deducted half a star because I felt the resolution to the actual plot was slightly lacking and disappointing.

I would definitely say that this book is not for everyone. I described it to my family as a “quiet book that packs a big punch”. If you like big action sequences and plot twists galore, this is not for you. Most of the book takes place in two locations, one of which is a single room. On the other hand, if you love character development, you will love this book. I really enjoy character development when I can get into the characters, and I really enjoyed Marin and Mabel.
