Kya is left behind by every person in her life and has to learn to fend for herself from an early age. Learning to trust people is understandably hard for her and it’s heartbreaking to see nobody bother to return for her.
Jumpin’ and Mabel are my favourite characters of the book. They go out of their way to show care and try to provide for Kya as much as they can.
I’ve seen some bad reviews complaining about the scientifically detailed explanations of the animals and marsh in the book but I didn’t find those parts too boring. Did I need to know everything I learned? Probably not. Did it make the book any less enjoyable or make the flow slower for me? Not at all.
