Devil's Game by Joanna Wylde
4.0
ok I loved this book. This book shows love doesn't happen in a pretty vacuum with no problems and no other people messing it up. It also shows that the biker way is definitely not the civilian way. Hunter is a Devil's Jack the enemy of Em's dad's MC the Reapers. As the Presidents daughter Em is the overprotected princess who wants to live a little and falls for Liam not knowing Liam is Hunter a Devil's Jack. Circumstances force Hunter to deviate from the plan he had to use Em and in turn destroy her fragile trust. The rest of the book goes on with them both struggling to stay apart because they know it's not likely to work out. Being together is going to cost both of them the trust of their clubs and loved ones. As Burke (Jack's MC) said “Romeo and Juliet died, son. Consider that all the answer you need.” is answer to if he would have allowed the relationship if it hadn't been beneficial at the time. In the end the heart wants what the heart wants and it comes down to needs versus wants and what is most important in life personally.
On to the characters!
Liam/Hunter: He's a vicious brutal bastard. And I love him for it. Even when he was a crow bar with a swiss army knife taped to it (AKA a tool and a half) it was done for him with purpose. It might not make sense to others but it makes sense to him. He's at the core of it a protector. Even if he's protecting Em from him. From the first scene of his in the book to the last he was all about the protection of others despite what nefarious deeds or sacrifices he had to make.
Em: Em is fierce. She knows MC life and loves it. As Hunter says at one point. "Best fuckin' old lady ever." She's stuck deciding between her club, her dad and her heart the whole book. I wanted to punch Deke when he calls her spoiled. Despite being daddy's little girl and the "club princess" she doesn't wait around wringing her hands waiting to be rescued.
I'm still kind of bitter about this book on their behalf because while they're getting their Happily Ever After it was after sacrifices on both of their behalves. Neither of them will be 100% trusted by their respective clubs again unless in the future they join together not just declare a truce that could end at any time. In the end they made their choice and accepted the lives they'll lead but I'm still angry even though I know it wouldn't be all hearts and flowers and moonbeams. You would think their friends and families would know them well enough to know how strong they both are unless lives are on the line.
