This book is full of humor and heart, featuring a protagonist who learns how to show up for the people in her life. At the beginning of the novel I had to keep reminding myself that for character growth to happen, you have to start with a less-than-perfect character. Skye was so self-centered that I was cringing while listening to all of her justifications and ridiculously rude actions. Sure, some of the situations she ended up in were hilarious, but I can laugh and wince at the same time, thank you very much. This only makes her relationship with Vicky all the sweeter as Skye realizes that if she wants to stay in this 12 year old's life, she has to be the dependable aunt-like figure that she's always resisted turning into.

McKenzie touches on themes of gentrification, police brutality, aging, and caring for an aging relative, but the majority of the story is focused on Skye's relationships with Vicky and Faye. The narrator was a perfect fit for Skye and I loved the West Philly setting! Highly recommend this one; although it takes some time to get into the story, the payoff is worth it.
