TLDR; A fiercely feminist novel with wonderfully witchy vibes which will leave you wanting to run away to the woods.
Emilia Hart masterfully intertwines witchy vibes, historical mystery, and a poignant feminist melancholy that resonates throughout the novel. “Weyward” encapsulates a timeless yearning within women’s hearts - a desire to break free from oppressive societal norms and see authenticity in the nature. This is the story of three women who live in a world which doesn’t quite accept them, under the shadow of male violence, layered with the burdens and expectations which come with being a woman. It’s a powerful portrayal of the enduring challenges women face across generations.

The novel’s brilliance lies in its multigenerational scope, tying a common thread between the common struggles women have faces across the ages. Regardless of the time period, the Weyward cottage, with its garden, bugs, teas, and mysteries, stands as a resilient beacon, embodying the enduring power passed down through generations. As much as I loved this book, it is not a feel-good tale; it unflinchingly addresses harsh realities, including abuse, neglect, domestic violence, and the complexities of pregnancy (wanted and unwanted), and birth.
While there is magic in the book, it is not written, and does not read, as a fantasy. The magic in the book is enchantingly nature and connection-based, eschewing traditional wands and potions, It’s a brief but powerful manifestation of a woman’s connection with the natural world, calling on trees, bugs, and birds to protect herself and her fellow women. Emilia Hart’s writing is eloquent, seamlessly navigating between generations, adding in just the right amount of mysticism, and weaving disparate stories into a cohesive thread.
This is the kind of book where, when I finished it, I needed to go sit under a tree and think about myself and the world and my place in it. Emilia Hart's debut is nothing short of stunning, and the imagery of Weyward Cottage lingers, as if you've truly visited, shared tea, and engaged in heartfelt conversations with the remarkable Weyward women.
