If I Never Met You by Mhairi McFarlane
4.0
I forgot how much fun this was!
It is the classic fake dating trope and I absolutely lapped it up. Laurie was a real tour de force and I absolutely felt her rage & humiliation. I also always LOVE reading a Northern character and the audiobook narrator did a great Leeds accent.
Her ex Dan was epicly pathetic and a real drip. Jamie however, was charming, honest and earnest - though tragically misunderstood by his colleagues.
This was such a great depiction of office politics and everyday sexism in the workplace.
Laurie's friends were really fun & gave honest advice, and felt so much more 3D than the usual fictional besties. McFarlane always writes such great friendships! Some may criticise the first act for focusing for too long on the break up, but honestly an 18 year relationship ending in that way would take that long to get over. You felt Laurie's pain and rage at the public humiliation of it all.
I think this is my favourite Mhairi McFarlane and probably because it is set in Manchester & I knew all the places they went to.
Highly recommend this fun read!
