Meet Cute by Meredith Russo, Dhonielle Clayton, Julie Murphy, Nicola Yoon, Ibi Zoboi, Katie Cotugno, Jocelyn Davies, Kass Morgan, Katharine McGee, Jennifer L. Armentrout, Nina LaCour, Emery Lord, Sara Shepard

3.0

As with many anthologies, it was a blend of unique stories all with personalities of their own. With that being said, the book did not hit the ground running, and I almost DNF’ed the whole thing because I absolutely could not get behind the first few stories. Though all the stories are short, the first few are especially so, being only a dozen pages or so and everything felt very rushed. Not only that but the characters weren’t likable and I could not see them becoming likable even in a longer story format, and so as someone very character driven, I unfortunately would have given those a one star.

On the flip side, as I continued on, there were slowly more and more stories that I liked and made me smile in a way that a meet-cute should. They felt airy and light but concluded if that makes sense. I don’t think I have a stand out favorite but some honorable mentions would be the one with the overdue library book, the one with the island and strings, the one with the space expedition, and the one with the memory erase. I liked all them for different reasons but I think overall they were just well written and had a good concept.

So in conclusion, the stories balanced each other out to an average collection of stories. I wouldn’t dismiss the whole book or call it good. It’s like a catalog I would recommend you browse through to find what you like. Take some, leave some.
