The Fifth Season by N.K. Jemisin

3.0

Actual rating: 3.5

This book featured exquisitely crafted characters and worlds. The lore, cultures, geography, rules of fantasy, all were fleshed out beautifully. And I also appreciated the reveal related to the main characters.

However, my major complaint is that there was almost no forward motion throughout the whole book. The characters seemed to simply wander through the story, without a real sense of purpose save exposition for the sake of the reader. I feel like I read 400 pages of exposition and 50 pages of actual story. As interesting as the world was, I didn't find the story itself compelling enough to want to continue on with the series.
