I feel awful about this but the book was one of the most disappointing reads in a while. I am aware I am not the target age demographic however it was more than writing feeling young. I was hoping for a fun even slightly cheesy version of my favorite Disney film. Instead, there was a lot of repetition over the issues (for example, that darn ruby necklace) and the changes didn’t make the story a worthy adaptation. I’ve read books that weren’t meant to be BatB have stronger parallels. Unfortunately, it was my first time reading anything by the author and the book left me unsure of reading anything else by her. Anyway, the author wrote a strong sister relationship, tried to make the characters diverse and threw some anti-colonialism commentary so that was nice.
